Go on a treasure hunt across Ærø

The Island Treasure Hunt invites the whole family on a fun journey of discovery through Ærø’s nature, history and culture. Along the way, you’ll visit five selected locations on the island, where little tasks and questions bring the experience to life for both children and adults.

The treasure hunt isn’t about being first, but about being curious, looking around and experiencing Ærø in a new way.

Discover five of Ærø’s special places

The treasure hunt takes you around some of the island’s most exciting sights. Among other things, you can explore the historic Søby Volde at Søbygaard, visit Skjoldnæs Lighthouse on the island’s northern tip, go exploring at Bregninge Church, examine the market square in Ærøskøbing in detail and experience the iconic bathing huts at Eriks Hale.

At each checkpoint, you’ll find tasks where the answers are hidden in the surroundings. These might be details on buildings, clues in the landscape or little quirks that only the observant will spot. This makes the trip a shared experience, where the whole family can help each other solve the mysteries.

See more of the island along the way

The island treasure hunt is also a great opportunity to explore more of Ærø. At each checkpoint, we’ll therefore suggest short detours from the treasure hunt.

The checkpoints are spread across the island and take you through coastal landscapes, villages and historic settings. The sea is never far away, and in many places the view of the South Funen Archipelago accompanies you along the way.

How to get started

The treasure hunt booklet can be collected from the local tourist information centres on Ærø. Then all you have to do is choose the first checkpoint and set off on your adventure.

Once all the tasks have been completed, you can have your answers checked at Ærøskøbing Tourist Information, where successful treasure hunters can take home a medal as a memento of the experience.

Complete it at your own pace

You decide for yourselves where the tour begins and in what order to visit the checkpoints. Some complete the treasure hunt in a single day, whilst others make it part of a holiday spread over several days.

As the checkpoints are spread across the whole island, the treasure hunt is easiest to complete by car. However, if you’re used to cycling, a bike is also an obvious way to explore both the checkpoints and the countryside. The most relaxed option is to take the free bus around the island. Most checkpoints are either directly on the route or within a short walk of a bus stop.

Skjoldnæs Lighthouse is a little further from the local bus route (5 km), but here you can hire bikes at Søby Harbour and cycle the final stretch through the open countryside. The bathing huts at Eriks Hale are also within easy walking distance of the nearest bus stop (1.5 km). This way, you can easily tailor the trip to suit your holiday and pace.

More island treasure hunts

If you’ve developed a taste for experiencing the Danish islands in a different way, the adventure can continue on Læsø, Langeland and Samsø, where you’ll also find island treasure hunts.

Pick up your treasure hunt booklet at one of the , and you’re ready to set off.
