Flaskeskibsmuseet

A nice collection of bottle ships and ship models.

Are you visiting Ærøskøbing during the summer season and curious about maritime cultural heritage and craftsmanship? Then Flaske-Peter’s collection of ships in bottles and ship models is just the thing for you.

The collections have been on display in Ærøskøbing’s former poorhouse since 1943. Flaske-Peter (1873–1960) managed to build more than 1,700 ships in bottles, 50 large ship models and around 70 cigar boxes. On Smedegade, you can explore hundreds of them.

Every ship in a bottle is unique, bearing witness to dexterity, skill, and a keen eye for detail and proportions. On average, Flaske-Peter spent 2½ days completing each ship in a bottle. In the collection, you can see bottles from Alaska, Singapore, Shanghai and London. There are small, large, thick, thin, round and long-necked bottles. There are square whisky bottles, greenish liqueur bottles, a Chinese beer bottle and a Russian vodka bottle. There are bottles shaped like a clown, a parrot and a pig. All could serve as frames for these small works of art.
